Выпускники американских университетов отличаются от выпускников британских вузов. Студенты из США проще и жизнерадостнее, а студенты из Великобритании более чопорные.

О работе

Я окончила университет в 2015 году. Когда вернулась в Казахстан, у меня было желание делать что-то новое. Меня пригласили в министерство, в департамент изменения климата.

Летом я начала работать в Международном центре зеленых технологий и инвестиционных проектов, созданном на базе EXPO. Применяю все знания и опыт здесь.

What are Ivy League Universities? Ivy League Meaning:

As we have mentioned, Ivy League Universities are some of the most prestigious Universities in USA. It is a group of athletic universities that are highly competitive in nature. The universities are very selective with their acceptance in enrollment, and they are considered elite. The quality of the education in these universities are unmatched in the USA.

The term Ivy League itself is used for an athletic event between the Ivy League Universities, which are situated mostly in North-Eastern America.

The Ivy League Universities are among the top ranked universities not only in  the US, but also across the world. The admission requirements are very high, and the selection committees are highly selective. Right from the 1960s, the Ivy League Universities carry this reputation, and it is still ongoing. With streams ranging from Engineering and science, to Art, Law and Medicine, the Universities are known for everything.

What Can You Determine From These Ivy League Rankings?

As you probably know, Ivy League colleges have extremely good reputations. All Ivies are ranked in the top 18 National Universities by US News. In terms of numerical rankings, there isn’t much distinction among Ivy League schools, but there are some notable differences.

In most Ivy League rankings, Princeton, Harvard, and Yale are at the top. They’re the top Ivy League schools and some of the very best colleges in the US. They’re most comparable to top-tier non-Ivy League schools such as Stanford and MIT.There’s probably some debate about which schools compose the next tier of Ivy League schools, but, based on my rankings, I would put Columbia, Penn, and Brown in the second tier. Their academic reputations aren’t quite as established as those of the first-tier schools, and as a whole they’re slightly less selective. Comparable non-Ivy League schools include Duke and Caltech.

The final tier of Ivy League schools would be Dartmouth and Cornell. Cornell has the highest acceptance rate of all Ivy League institutions (but it still only admits 11% of its applicants). Non-Ivy League schools that are comparable to Dartmouth and Cornell in terms of quality include Northwestern and Vanderbilt.

Remember that rankings are subjective, but they can reveal how colleges are viewed by employers, graduate schools, and the general public. Even though Harvard and Cornell are both incredibly prestigious schools where you can receive a world-class education and become part of a successful alumni network, the general consensus is that Harvard is the better school.

Программы самые разнообразные: инженерное дело, предпринимательство, курсы лидерства, математика, естественные или гуманитарные науки. Самые популярные лагеря – Летняя школа при Йельском университете и Лидерский тур по Лиге плюща.

Для поступления в летнюю школу иностранцам необходимо подать:

• Заявку (онлайн на сайте университета).
• Международный сертификат о владении английским языком TOEFL (более 40 баллов) или IELTS (от 4.0), то есть уровень В2-С1
• Справку с оценками за последний год или несколько лет с нотариальным переводом на английский язык и пересчетом баллов отечественных отметок в международный показатель GPA, который должен составлять не менее 3,5 балла.
• Рекомендательные письма на английском языке от двух учителей школы (преподавателей предметов, близких к тематике летнего курса).
• Эссе на английском языке с рассказом о себе.
• Подтверждение финансовой состоятельности – выписку с банковского счета родителей.

Заявки подаются в апреле-мае, оплата за рассмотрение заявления составляет 50-150 $. Стоимость летней школы в разных университетах варьируется от 4 100 до 11 000 $ за 2-3 недели, ученики обеспечиваются проживанием и питанием, включая блюда вегетарианской, халяльной и кошерной кухни.

Дополнительные расходы включают:

• перелет в США – от 500 $;
• медицинскую страховку – 75-500 $;
• оформление визы – около 250 $;
• оплату учебных материалов – 75-300 $;
• средства на личные расходы – 150-300$ в неделю;
• прохождение языкового теста – 180-260 $.

В некоторых лагерях ученикам начисляют кредиты за обучение, и если после школы они поступают в американский вуз, эти кредиты будут засчитаны для первого курса.

Учеба в летнем лагере университета не гарантирует поступление. Вероятность успешного зачисления повышается только при участии в Secondary School Program в Гарварде и Pre-Baccalaureate Program в Брауновском университете.

Тёмная сторона «Лиги Плюща»

Несмотря на чопорность и претенциозность «древней восьмёрки», многие смотрят на пафос «Лиги Плюща» скептически. Приёмная комиссия отдаёт наибольшее предпочтение детям бывших выпускников, а также выходцам из богатых и знаменитых семей. Большинство здешних студентов — представители «золотой молодёжи», чьё поступление было заранее проплачено. Молодые люди из бедных слоёв населения, пробившиеся в «Плющи», собственным трудом и знаниями, часто подвергаются жесточайшему давлению и дискриминации. Также ходят слухи о том, что руководство университетов часто покрывает безнравственные и откровенно криминальные выходки некоторых своих студентов

Но, несмотря на всё это, для многих миллионов школьников и их родителей «Лига Плюща» остаётся волшебным средневековым братством студентов и преподавателей, где царят рыцарские традиции и откуда открывается путь в мир богатства и престижа.

“The Big Three” rank among the top Ivy League schools on nearly every list

Historically, “The Big Three”—Harvard, Yale, and Princeton—have comprised the top three institutions across the board (they also have the lowest Ivy League acceptance rates). However, more recently, Columbia and Brown have also made appearances in the top 3.

Selectivity is associated with each school’s desirability. The more selective a school is, the more likely it is that your child will list it as their dream school. Moreover, graduate programs, employers, and others who might one day evaluate your child’s resume will view higher-ranked schools slightly more favorably than lower-ranked ones. That said, all Ivy League schools are excellent. Evaluators will be impressed by your child’s attendance of any of them.

Overall rankings are lacking when it comes to determining “fit”

Most people would agree that Harvard, Yale, and Princeton are considered the most elite and prestigious Ivy League schools. However, based on your child’s subjects of interest, preferred setting, and opportunities, some schools might be a better fit than others.

For instance, if your child is interested in studying political science or drama, Yale would be an excellent choice. On the other hand, if your child wants to pursue engineering or hotel management, Cornell might be the better fit for them.

In addition, it’s important to consider each school’s setting when applying to Ivy League schools. Penn, for instance, might offer more immediate access to working with low-income communities than Princeton. Moreover, whether your child wants to attend school in an urban, suburban, or rural setting should influence their choice on where to apply. For example, do they want to live in a big city, or be as close to nature as possible?

Student body size is another meaningful variable for your child to think about. 6 of the 8 schools enroll somewhere between 4,000 and 7,000 undergraduate students, whereas only 2—Penn and Cornell—enroll over 10,000 undergrads. Whether your child wants to be part of a relatively small or large student body might contribute to their overall happiness and social opportunities during college.

Finally, campus culture varies from school to school. For example, Harvard promotes close relationships among students through its residential college system, whereas Brown is widely regarded as the most progressive Ivy League school.

Ivy League schools aren’t the only prestigious schools in the country

Although the Ivy League is often used synonymously with “best colleges”, there are a number of other institutions that are just as academically and reputationally elite. In other words, your child does not have to attend an Ivy League school in order for them to be considered among the country’s highest-achieving students.

Приемная комиссия учитывает средний балл и предметы, которые студент изучал в школе или на программе бакалавра; результаты SAT/ACT General section и SAT II subject (минимальное требование 2-3 предмета).

После этого приемная комиссия выводит Академический Индекс студента. При помощи Academic Index, университет сравнивает между собой большое количество студентов и составляет вступительный рейтинг. Если ваш академический индекс ниже требуемого — вашу аппликацию сразу отклонят.

Особенность селективных университетов — высокие академические показатели (оценки и тесты) не дадут вам автоматического зачисления в университет, но по крайней мере дадут вам возможность пройти на следующий этап вступительного процесса.

3 Эссе, мотивационное письмо (25% успеха)

Эссе создает ваш академический профиль и описывает внеурочную деятельность. Оно объединяет ваши документы, которые вы подаете в университет, и объясняет каждый ваш шаг на пути к поступлению таким образом, что у приемной комиссии создается ваш полный образ.

Типы эссе:

— Personal Statement

Наиболее распространенный тип, в котором вы описываете свои амбиции, интересы и навыки. Для вас это шанс сформулировать, почему вы хотели бы изучать определенный курс или предмет, и какими опытом вы обладаете, что привело вас к увлечению выбранной областью.

— Supplement Essay

Кроме письма мотивации, или вместо, него университет может запросить эссе на определенную тему (What is academic integrity? Why Columbia University?). Очень часто в таких эссе есть конкретное ограничение по количеству слов (например, 150, 250 или 650 — ни больше, ни меньше)

— Separate Scholarship Applications

A Brief History of the Ivy League

The Ivy League consists of eight of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the United States. These schools originally formed a league based on their common interests in both academics and athletics.

• Columbia University (founded 1754)
• Cornell University (founded 1865)
• Dartmouth College (founded 1769)
• Harvard University (founded 1636)
• University of Pennsylvania, AKA UPenn (founded 1740)
• Princeton University (founded 1746)
• Yale University (founded 1702)

Even though the schools themselves date back to well before the American Revolution, the term «Ivy League» has been around for a shorter time than you might think. The most popular origin story is that the term was coined in the early 1930s by a sportswriter for the New York Herald-Tribune who complained about covering a football game between Columbia and UPenn instead of a game featuring his alma mater, Fordham University. He somewhat disdainfully referred to Columbia and UPenn as old «ivy-covered» schools and was the first to use the term «Ivy League» in the article that followed.

The label didn’t become official until 1945, when the presidents of the eight schools got together to form an agreement «for the purpose of reaffirming their intention of continuing intercollegiate football in such a way as to maintain the values of the game, while keeping it in fitting proportion to the main purposes of academic life.» Essentially, they made it their mission to work together to balance athletics and academics at the colleges (originally just football, but later extended to other sports). They would call themselves the Ivy League.

The Ivy League is kind of like the Justice League, except back when it was originally formed only rich white dudes could be a part of it. Well, I guess that’s mostly true for the Justice League too. Now I’m depressed.

Two inter-university committees were formed, one that enforced the rules of eligibility for Ivy League sports (mostly comprised of college deans) and one that established general athletic policies (comprised of athletic directors). Starting in the mid-1950s, these schools began to organize competitions amongst each other in a variety of sports. The Ivy League later added committees for admission and financial aid as the organization took on a more academic focus.

Although the creation of the Ivy League was rooted in athletics, nowadays these schools are known for their academic prestige and famous alumni. All the Ivy League colleges have large endowments that are the product of wealthy alumni contributions over the years. Ivy League schools are often seen as symbols of elitism because they attract students who come from legacies of wealth, but they offer some great financial aid packages to disadvantaged students because of their large endowments.

Ivies represent some of the most selective and well-known colleges in the country. The schools of the Ivy League have had more time than most other colleges to build up their reputations through the accumulation of highly successful graduates. In addition to competitive undergraduate programs, Ivy League universities offer some of the best professional programs for law and medicine.

Some tips to prepare for admission to an Ivy League

All Ivy League universities have the reputation of being very choosy in terms of their student pool. Securing an admission here would be really tough for sure, but at the same time all these universities also compete with one another when it comes to attracting the highly qualified students. The admission officer at the university does not know you so she would rely on what you are in your file.

Your GMAT score, high school accomplishments, common application essay, recommendations, extra-curricular activities and the like, are what give the admission officer an insight of what to expect from you. And, all these things need time.

As pressing as it sounds, the preparation really must start early. Improve your high school grades, study hard to clear your GMAT with a certain desirable score with which you can apply at all the Ivy’s.

Show your other side to the admission committee with your extra-curricular activities. But don’t go for just any activity like a sport or art alone. Take up something that you really believe in, something that would define you or be an extension of your thoughts be it volunteering or NGO work or even sports, just about anything that is close to your heart and gives you happiness.

Most importantly, build up the trust of people you want should recommend you. That comes with consistent performance. So you see, you ought to start early in life.

And if anyone asks you any of the earlier questions, let them know:
MIT and Duke are not Ivy League colleges. There are no Ivy League schools in Canada, UK, India. In fact, outside the 8 that we’ve talked about, there are no ivy league schools anywhere else in the world.

Are Ivy League Schools Really Better Than Other Universities?

The members of the Ivy League may be some of the most prestigious colleges in the country, but will they actually give you a better education than other schools with similar acceptance rates?

The main reason an Ivy League school might be better than any other top-tier university is due to name recognition. A diploma from an Ivy League college may open doors for you because employers and graduate school admissions officers will know immediately that you went to an extremely competitive school. Ivy League universities have great international reputations that not many other colleges can claim. You’ll also get the opportunity to network with highly successful and influential alumni.

Still, you should keep in mind that there are major differences between schools within the Ivy League in terms of reputation. The traditional top three, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, are seen as somewhat more impressive than less selective Ivies like Cornell or Dartmouth. They’re all well-respected schools, but getting into one Ivy League school isn’t equivalent to getting into all of them.

For this and other reasons, it’s risky to assume that Ivy League grads will end up more «successful» overall than other students. Success is more about a student’s inherent drive and ability than which school he or she ends up attending. One study found that «the better predictor of earnings was the average SAT scores of the most selective school a teenager applied to and not the typical scores of the institution the student attended.» In other words, students who applied to Ivy League-caliber schools but ended up attending less selective colleges fared no worse than their elite school counterparts.

Ambition is one of the most important factors in success. It’s also a good idea to carry a heavy briefcase at all times. People are more likely to hire you if you have one disproportionately strong arm.

The truth is that Ivy League colleges don’t always have the highest quality of instruction for undergraduate students. Overall, they tend to be very focused on doing academic research to maintain their position at the forefront of academia. Professors may be less interested in teaching than they are in their personal projects; alternatively, schools may end up hiring tons of adjunct faculty to keep costs down. You could end up with a better learning experience at a small, highly selective college that exclusively enrolls undergraduate students because the professors are there primarily to teach.

Ivy League colleges also aren’t the only schools where you’ll derive inspiration from the amazing things the students around you are doing. There are many selective colleges and universities around the country that attract highly motivated students and have learning environments that will challenge you. Though the Ivies have high concentrations of intense students, they definitely don’t have a monopoly on undergraduate talent.
